Stuck Bendix killing motor?

Ok, so I had the old girl in the water yesterday for a test run. Things seemed good at first, but she died after a few minutes. It would then start and idle, but would die when I put it in gear. I put her on the trailer and brought her home, which is when I discovered that the bendix was solidly stuck up in the flywheel and half of the gear was chewed away. It took a hammer and chisel to get it out of the flywheel. The flywheel is a bit chewed but I think still serviceable. I have a spare anyway. I have a pic in my phone and if I can transfer it to my computer, I'll post it up. The internet is extremely slow here in Kino Bay. ...Mark

I had a similar problem recently, only my starter actually broke off and the motor kept running.

Do you think the starter was triggered from something while you were running, or it was just stuck like that from the first start?

In my case a frayed wire from a trim relay was making contact with the bottom of the starter, causing the bendix to pop up when I hit the trim down switch.

I believe that it was from the first start. I'll admit that I didn't even take off the cowl because the person I was with was freaking and I just wanted to get it back on the trailer. it is plenty chewed up and certainly was engaged for a while. It is good news that yours killed the motor. I was real worried that something gave up the ghost in the lower unit...Mark

I'm sorry BTL, I see that yours didn't stop the motor, I am going crazy here I think. I ran her today with the ear muffs and it seems to be of, it shifted into forward and reverse and didn't kill the motor. Fortunately I had a spare starter...Mark
