I have a stuck bearing carrier in my old 1979 Merc 40 Hp. i had to drill out the cover nut. But then I cant get out the rest.

I have tried to heat it up a bit and whacked at bit, but I guess the gear housing is fragile.

Does it help to remove something else, like water pump?

Please help! The summer is short here in Sweden but now the weather is great...

Thanks in advance to any ideas!

This worked for me on a Merc 200 that was badly seized. Find a metal plate with a hole in the middle that you can put over the propshaft so it sits flat against the open end of the gear housing. Then stack up spacers and washers until you can put a nut on the propshaft. Then tighten the nut to put tension on the shaft and carrier. Heat the housing with a propane torch--better if you can use two torches to heat both sides at the same time. Keep heating and tightening the nut until it breaks loose.

I used a variety of plumbing parts that were sitting around the shop to fabricate my puller.

The book says to put the prop shaft in a vise and hit the housing with a mallet. That usually works but the procedure above is good for the stubborn ones.

One thing I omitted--I used the splined washer in the stack of washers and spacers to keep the propshaft from turning. This ended up deforming the splined washer so I had to replace that--not a big deal, but I'm not sure it was really necessary, since you could also hold the drive shaft to keep the propshaft from turning if the LU is in gear, although that might put a lot of stress on the gears of you have to really torque the nut.

This just occurred to me--if you don't want to use the splined washer in the stack of spacers, use a couple of plumbing parts that screw together (like a coupling and a reducer, plus washers as needed) then just put the prop nut on the end of the shaft until it is snug. Unscrew the plumbing parts from each other to get the "pull" on the whole rig, so you don't have to worry with keeping the prop shaft from turning.

Great idea - this last bit. I have tried the homemade puller of tubes and nuts already. The problem was really how to stop the turning of drive/prop shaft.

Now knowning it worked for you with heating at the same time I will go a little harder on it this time.

Thanks alot!

It worked!

The plumbing was a little hard to get a (wise)grip on so I turned the prop-nut instead. Holding the drive shaft with a wise grip. Now knowing it worked for you it was easier to push a litle harder... and pop it started to move and out it came!

Some light grinding of the marks on the prop shaft to make sure not to damage any parts of the w-pump later.

On tricky part if anyone else tries this is that if you have tubes around the prop-shaft when all start to move loose the gear will not longer connect to the driveshaft. Therefore it is a little tricky to take the locknut for the prop off again. I used a chisel at the edge of the nut and with some small fast whacks the momentum help to keep the propshaft still and the nut to turn.

Thanks alot Motor Boater Bill!!

Your information really helped.
