I was going to remove the prop on my volvo 280B outdrive and the allen screw is stripped/frozen in place I suspect the previous owner didn't grease the threads, how do I extract the allen screw, the allen screwhead is round out, looks like I'll have to drill out the head. any advice ?

PB Blaster, let it soak.....Will the next size up standard or metric fit? Or drill it & use an ez out....Be patient with the PB, it will work wonders if you give it time....JK

If you do have to drill it, just drill enough to pop the head off the bolt. You can then remove the prop cone with a strap wrench or a pipe wrench. Once the cone is off, you'll have excellent access to the shaft of the bolt to grip it with vice grips and get it out. PB blaster is a good idea regardless though.

Image for those who aren't sure what these parts look like:
Many thanks for the info, I was going to Kroll ( this is a brand of penetrating oil ) and let it set for a couple of days, the allen hex is such that the next size is just a tad too large for the next size, I was going to grind the sides of the allen wrench on a taper on all sides so it would fit, and try that after the oil soak, by the way what is PB Blaster?, I'm assuming it's a penetrating oil

I forgot to ask, and in the volvo shop manual it doen't say or I didn't see it, I'm assuming the screw are reverse threaded and the cone is reverse threaded?

Nope, they are both standard thread. Clockwise to tighten, Counterclockwise to loosen.

EDIT:
I have used PB Blaster, and Aerokroil (Kroll as you called it assuming Aerodrioil is the right product.) and have found the Aerokroil sometimes works better the the PB Blaster, sometimes the othe way around. The PB Blaster is another type of penetrating oil. The Aerokroil is much cleaner to use.

I think you'll need a cobalt drill bit to get through the SS bolt head. At least the Allen head keeps the bit centered for ya, should you need to drill...

Probably won't help, but I have had some success using valve grind compound on stripped phillips and allen head screws.Only reason I keep a can in my toolbox. But it is worth a try before breaking out the drill.

Other thought would be to grind off some of the cone and use visegrips on the bolt.

I ususally drill as a last resort.

DHP

Valve grinding compound is one of my favorite tricks with phillips head screws. Never thought to use it on an Allen head. How dumb of me.

Sorry to be dumb could you explain the use of valve grinding compound to remove a screw?

Re: Stuck Allen screw in Volvo outdrive propeller cone

Well I ended up drilling the allen head of the screw and that allowed me to unscrew the cone, however the prop seems to be frozen on the shaft, I tried lightly tapping on the blades with a block of wood, but it didn't move that much ( 1/8" ), I've got some Kroil oil on it, the prop is a Michigan Whell, and it looks like a Mercuriser type, Is there a prop-puller for issues like this?
Any advice is welcome .... the saga goes on!

chris, the valve paste helps the screw driver or in this case the allen key to grip the screw, kind of works like a rubber glove when your trying to grip a jar lid i guess!

jasco, do you think the prop actually moved on the shaft or could the (1/8th inch) just be end float in the shaft, if it moved on the shaft than knock it back on and keep working it, if its moved on the shaft even just that 1/8th inch than that’s a good sign, keep working it and it should come off, not sure about a puller, I have never had to use one.

The shaft really has no slop from front to back, which kinda surprises me, I'll tap on it some more in the morning, hopefully the Kroil oil will lossen things up abit.

Well ... I got it off, took a heat gun to the area were the splines were and about 15 -20 minutes of heating and after about 15 minutes of tapping the blades with a wood block & hammer, it worked it self off, the prop was a Michigan Wheel #ssv-192-0, kinda looks like a mercruiser prop, prop goes to the prop shop for a tune-up & balance
