Struck rocks, mangled prop, engine problem?!

Hello,

I was out on the Mississippi yesterday in my Lund Fish and Ski with a 70hp Merc outboard. I had to move over quite far to give room to a passing barge and got into some rocks at about 1/2 speed. Engine shut down on impact but fired right back up and ran fine (to the point where I had not thought it even hit the engine. Thought maybe it was a dead head to the hull). Ran for about 2 miles at various speeds until we reached an area to beach and check the damage.

Checked the motor and found it had chipped and bent the prop beyond repair. Also took off about 3/4 of the skeg. I did not have a replacement prop with (dumb, I know) so had to make the 3 mile run back with what I had.

When we got back on the water I had problems. I could get to about 1/3 speed without much problem. If I tried to take it beyond that point, I would lose forward momentum and the engine would bog down badly and often just sputter out. If I backed it back to 1/3 throttle it would "catch" again and run okay.

Question - Is it possible that as I tried to increase speed the prop was too difficult for the engine to turn and thus would die? Is it possible that the prop was slipping at higher speeds? Or have I done more major damage to the engine/linkage/???

A couple other notes - The prop drive shaft doesn't seem to be bent. I also discovered that the round "locking pin" the goes in front of the nut to hold the prop to the drive shaft had the two prongs on one side bent up.

My plan is to put a new prop on and replace the skeg to see what happens. However, money is tight and I don't really want to drop $200 or so for a new prop and skeg to find that the engine has a major problem that should have been obvious to me.

I doubt that the two issues are related.

Fix the damages then move on to the drivability issue.

Its very possible the prop is slipping. You need to have it rebuilt then test it again. Do not run it again until you get the prop fixed or you will be resealing the L/U.

Thanks guys. I should mention that I was fighting the currents on the way back (after seeing the damage). So, there was a greater load on the engine and, maybe, makes it more probable that the prop was slipping when trying to increase speed. It would happen just as I tried to reach a speed to plane the boat (which I assume is the greatest load placed on the engine/prop).

The old prop has already been removed and I won't try to run again until a new prop is on. Here's hoping there is no major damage!

You might have gotten lucky. My son (really :D) hits a rock shelf 2 years ago with a Mariner 40hp going 30MPH. Motor kicked up and shut down instantly. What a noise

Lost the bottom half of the skeg and tore up two of the three blades on the prop.

Floated into deeper water and restarted without any trouble. Idled back to the launch to minimize vibration. Cost me $100 to repair the skeg and bought a new prop.

Engine wouldn't bog if the prop was slipping. Either knocked something loose on the engine (wiring or flywheel or fuel lines) or bent something in the LU and is binding.
Them wing dams are hard.

hope it helps.

Yep. That is the part of this that worries me. If the engine would just rev to high RPMs and lose forward speed, it would seem obvious I spun the prop. This bog down/sputter out is what has me concerned. The hard part for me to wrap my head around is that it seems to run strong as long as I keep it 1/3 throttle or less (and ran that way for a few miles). If I had damaged fuel lines/flywheel/wiring wouldn't I have problems at just about all speeds above idle?

Edit note: One other piece of info...I recalled that when I had it beached to check the engine I was able to turn the prop rather easily with the motor in gear. As it turned it would click with each 1/4 turn or so but would turn as easily as it would in neutral.
