Hello,
Has anyone ever encounter this? I was running it in a tub and keep checking the temp of the water. It was cool and the water coming out of the port holeson the legwas warm not hot. At 140F the overheat buzzer came on. At that point I shut her off. I felt the block to confirm my gauge and buzzer and was hot indeed.

After you pull the thermostat if its still running hot, you probably have a blown head gasket. A head gasket will run you 30-40 dollars and is a easy fix, just pay attention to torque and bolting sequence. Be sure to inspect head for damage and resurface if needed. If you run in fresh water you probably wont have a problem, salt water can damage some older heads.

I know where the thermostat is but as far as the head not so much. Is it the side with the spark plugs? Or is is the side to the left in the picture below?

Thanks again,

All those screws around where the spark plugs are. Take that plate off and change the gasket! And clean the plate and check to make sure all the flow tubs are clear and not cloged or week and falling on each other

Well, I pulled the thermostat and put it into a pot of boiling water. As soon as I dropped it in the t-stat opened up. So I pulled it out and tried it again, same result. I have a head temp gauge it read 140 F when the buzzer went off. So I turned off the engine, but if I would had let run a bit longer, the thermostat would have opened up, cooling the motor. I still ordered a new one.

I think what the previous poster was telling you was to take out the thermostat and run the engine with out it to see if it still over heated. ;)

Can someone explain why a blown head gasket would cause an overheat situation? Thanks,Jerry

Basically loss of water pressure right?

Automobiles maybe. Outboards shouldnt overheat because the cooling system is constant and is not sealed. Will cause rough runnin though. He needs to look elsewhere than a blown head gasket unless he hasn't checked compression yet.
