Stripped threads on Volvo SX outdrive

I have a 1997 Volvo Penta SX outdrive and the threads on top of the outdrive where the dipstick goes in are stripped. I must have overtightened at the end of the season last fall, and this spring when checking the gearcase level, I heard the threads pop and are now stripped.

I see where you can replace the outdrive cover piece where the dipstick screws in, but it costs about $150 and I have to deal with re-shimming it and everything.

Is there any way I can use a time-sert insert (like a Helicoil) to repair my existing piece?

If not, anywhere to get used parts for a Volvo Penta?

Good to know those threads can strip, the manual I have says to tighten 60-84 f-lbs

You might want to look at "YOUR" manual a little closer. It says INCH POUNDS, not FOOT POUNDS.
Here is a copy and paste from the manual.
Also note the difference in torque for dipstick and drain screw.

Tighten drain screw to 60-84 in. lb. (6,8-9,5 N?m). Tighten oil level
dipstick and gauge plug to 48-72 in. lb.
(5,4-8,1 N?m)

Not sure why you need a picture, He needs either a new cap (recommended) or a perfectly straight half a helicoil at just the right depth so it won't leak water into the drive.

Going to buy a inch pound wrench!

Thanks for pointing that out Don.

Ayuh,.. Just put it in with a Screwdriver instead of a Wrench...

Pull the Cap,+ take it to a Machine Shop,.... They'll fix you right up...3/8"x 16 is what you need...

That's what i was thinking of, that's why i asked for a picture to see how bad it was. Probably not a hard fix.

Thanks everyone who replied. I think I am going to seek out a good machine shop and see what they can do to repair for me.

If anyone on here is in the Atlanta, GA area (especially the North side of Atlanta) and knows a good machine shop, please let me know.
