I have a 1969 Johnson 6 hp kicker I purchased for use on a small 10' bass boat. In replacing plugs, #1 hole is stripped. I got hosed! Can it be repaired (i.e. thread insert, or tig fill and remachine, or replace head or ?)?

I AM SURE YOU CAN GET SOMETHING FROM A GOOD AUTO REPAIR STORE TO RESEAT THE SPARK PLUG PEPBOYS. IF POSSIABLE REMOVE THE PLATE WHERE THE SPARK plg is seated AND JUST REPLACE THE GASKET.

Howdy, Ricl. Helicoils will interfere slightly with heat dissipation from the spark plug. . . critical in a 2 stroke.

There was an insert that allowed stock heat dissipation. It was called Time-Serts and was a thin-walled stainless steel sleeve. I used to use them to restore Corvair heads many years ago. I bought them from OTTO Parts at 9659 Remer St., South El Monte, CA 91733. Back in the early '80s their phone was (818) 579-5875. I haven't done a Corvair in about 15 years, so I have no idea if they still exist, but Time-Serts probably do, if you can find them.

Good luck.
JB

It was probably a short cut, make-do attitude that got the head stripped in the first place. It's not just a 32 year-old little kicker, Ranger. One should never decline an opportunity to do a better job if one knows how. A Master Wrench like you knows that.

Happy Fathers' Day.
JB

I use to own an auto repair shop and this was a common problem. We bought a tap and thread repair kit from Napa. Just tap the hole, screw in the insert and screw in the plug. Ten bucks and ten minutes. The insert looks similar to a helicoil. I assume most auto parts store carries them.
