stripped gear shift cable in command console

I recently replaced water pump in lower unit on a (1977) 85 HP Johnson. When i put everything back together, I noticed that my gearshift cable was INOP. I manually shifted the gears into forward and reverse with the cable disconnected. The gears work fine, but I think I might have stripped my gear shift cable in the command console. I took the command console cover off and noticed that there was a plastic piece on the gear shift cable puller (i don't really no what it's called) that looked to be stripped. I do remember trying to put it in reverse gear while the unit was being lowered. I also remember pushing down on the command console lever to hard. I think this is the reason it will not go in forward or reverse. If so, would it be best to just replace my whole command console with a new one or try and just replace the piece that i may have stripped? The command console that i currently have is the original one. It also has the ignition built into the console. I would appreciate any input on this matter. Thanks

The shift and throttle cables on your control will probably not fit the universal setup. The wiring harness will adapt to the OMC controls before the system check motors. The diagrams for the remote control are shown in the BRP parts diagrams for your motor under "Remote Control".

The steel inner cable may have slipped in the casing guide. It is held in place by two opposing allen screws. You can attempt to tighten the grip on the cable if you find that it is loose. Do not overtighten or you can cut the cable.

Thanks for the diagram of the control console. This will help me alot. I will try and fix it myself first. If I can't, then i will just have to accept the fact that it is time to just bear the cost and buy a new one.....Thanks for the help.
