I have a 4 Winns 190 Horizon with a 5.0L engine and Volvo-Penta outdrive. The dipstick on top of the outdrive stripped out even though I didn't try to overtighten, and I have talked to others who had this same problem. How hard is it to replace the cover that contains the treaded portion for the outdrive dipstick? I have heard that there are shims in this area that have to be installed just right or it can cause damage to the outdrive. Can someone help me with this problem, and maybe give me a source for the part? I'm new to this forum, but it seems like there are some very knowledgable folks here.
Thanks,
Larry

Re: Stripped dipstick on Volvo Penta Outdrive

They aren't hard to replace, only held on with 4 bolts, and yes they are shimmed. If you can read a depth micrometer you should have no trouble. Volvo has been using 5.0L engines for 30+ years, and has had many different drives in that time. With out a drive model number it's impossible to give you further info.
