I've read on how to remove the drive, but do i remove the shift cable at the unit above the engine and then slide all of that out with the drive? just a little confused with that part. drive is an 84 800

Yes remove it first , otherwise that will get expensive when you destroy your shift cable

There is a video on youtube that helped me figure out the maze of shift cables. Kind of a goofy setup to me, but the video was step by step exactly how to do it correctly.
