Stringer /Deck Replacement

Hello All,

I have a 1972 Arrowglass tri-hull, which is getting a make-over. And like most older boat owners I noticed that the decking had some soft spots. So, I decided that I would replace it, well I found that the stringers were soft as well. Has anyone used the plastic decking material for stringer replacement. Its seems in theory that this would be the ideal material to avoid rot. Also I would like to inspect my transom, since I am this far, but I don't want to go cutting away the glass that it is inclosed in for no reason. Should I worry about the transom or not. I plan on using some 1/4"" aluminum for remouting the motor if for no other reason... piece of mind.
Thanks.

I would add boards to the sides of the stringers to reinforce them, without removing the old stringers. After the wood dries out, the wood will strengthen a little. If the transom seems ok I would not tamper with it. It is a major undertaking.

the decking material your talkin' about ,,if it's the type for home patio decks . it's totally not meant for structure at all.. it's only meant for the 'floor boards' of decks an not even for the structure membering of the deck..

it may be rot-proof but it's not for the riggors of a boat..

all it is ,,is recycled plastic bottles..

rot's rot.. it's cancer.. it must be removed an discarded.. i believe if good wood is placed adjourin' rot wood .. rot will jump on the good wood..

if the transom's bad.. ( an a '72 ,there's a good bet it is ) needs to be replaced also..

you can try 'seacast'..

do a 'SEARCH' on both transom & stringer rot and replacement ..an also 'seacast'

there's alot written on the subjects..

good luck

Re: Stringer /Deck Replacement

I have pulled the metal trim off the top of the transom and it doesn't appear to be rotted. So I believe I will let it go. Thanks.
