Hi, i have an 85 Thundercraft with a 3.8 and a stringer 800 outdrive. when running on the muffs in the drive way it goes into forward/reverse.neutral no problem.

When its in the water neutral is fine and reverse works well, but has an issue in forward, it shifts into forward smoothly with no problem, but while running there is clacking/knocking sort of sound coming from the outdrive. i was affraid to give it very much throttle because when i did it shook pretty bad.

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as i am new to boating,

Thanks in advance

Welcome to the stringer outdrive. I have the same outdrive and just had this same problem. You might check the water pump shaft in the upper housing. The gear teeth strip due to lack of greasing.
