strereo ticking

I just installed a house battery, ACR, and dual charger on a new to me boat. My son installed a new stereo. With nothing on except the stereo all is good, with the charger on there is a loud continual tick in the stereo. And in the driveway on the muffs and the engine idleing it is there, Turn of the engine and it stops. My son says he can install a filter for engine interference but I think it is the ACR. Any toughts?

Re: strereo ticking

If the stereo makes noise with the charger turned on then it is creating the initerference and that is perfectly normal since the charger is a switcher type makes lots of electrical noise. So filtering the power lead to the stereo may take care of the problem. Routing of the ACR and battery cables in close proximity to the radio antenna and power leads is a good way to pick up electrical noise. Route them as far away as possible.

Re: strereo ticking

After some thought I have decided that the only device or common in the noise is the automatic charging relay. Three ways to lisien to the stereo, (1) nothing on but the stereo, (2) include charger, (3) exclude charger and run engine. The ticking is present when there is charging taking place either from alternater or plug in charger. I hope someone has had similar problems and has a fix, I don't have a clue with what to do. It doesn't bother me I only listen to stereo when anchored, but my 18 yr old son is freaking out and he doesn't know what to do either. Thanks
Also it is not reception- he uses an IPOD

Try putting one of these in your system: http://www.crutchfield.com/p_003S15A/American-International-S-15A-15-amp-250-watt.html#details-tab

Like Silvertip already said it's power line noise introduced into your system. To reduce this you can route your power for the stereo along with and audio wires away from any other wires to reduce inductance from nearby wires. Other than the routing path and installing a filter there isn't anything you can do since there is no earth ground on a boat to ground your system to.

Re: strereo ticking

Go over this thread with regards to alternator noise and ground loops. Just.. nevermind the banter from the un-informed sources/grumpy old men crowd.. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=541702

Not saying that this is it since I can't hear the noise that you're describing, just saying that it's worth it to review the information.

Good luck. Noise in stereo systems drives me crazy..

Re: strereo ticking

I don't really have an option of seperating the lines more than 16 or 18 inches and I will look into purchasing a filter. Thanks
