Hi, i had the strangest shiting problem in my experience, is a 260 stock , with the motor off i can shift from reverse to forward with no problem, but whith the motor on, i just can move from neutral to fwd or from neutral to reverse, when crusing i can't find neutral, the shift lever got hard, so i hhave to stop the engine, move to nneutral, stat and move to reverse easy, i suspect about the reverse lock mechanism, but is related to hydrauic, thhhe lower unit have oil, again it shift easy with engine off, the clutch dog is the only piece that can have an issue as is direct mounted on the shaft, i cant think in other part, will apreciate your comments on this strange issue.

Assuming you have a Stern drive. .. Sounds like the shift interrupt is acting up. Do you get that brief 'stall' as you shift? Have a friend shift for you while you watch the interrupt switch. It should flick very briefly as it comes out of gear. ... that's when you should hear the stall. If you don't hear the stall, then the switch is out of adjustment or faulty.

if you cant adjust the lower shift cable, it may need replacing.
