My buddy has a 2005 Chaparral 236 SSi with a Volvo 5.7 GXi DP. On our last trip he started complaining of a semi-violent vibration . . . in neutral at idle . . .
So, I spent some time on the boat and inspected everything, mounts etc. and we also cruised around. All fine, and then we were sitting there, at idle, in neutral, nobody moving, no current, no nothin' and all of a sudden the whole boat starts wigglin'. Best word I can think of . . . wigglin'. Kinda wigglin' around on her own almost like the whole boat went fluid He put it in gear and the wigglin' stopped. So I climbed all over the thing again and I can't see or feel anything loose or unusual. Didn't feel like an engine miss, more like something in the whole drive train package, if that makes any sense. I have had a boat pull out mounts before and it felt a little like that, but that was a Stringer and the whole drive package is loose as their is no hard mount with the transom, and you only felt the issue in gear . . .
Last little piece I can add, I was sitting in the stern and I thought I felt the wiggle starting again. And I look up to say something and he was moving the steering from one side to the other getting ready to put it in gear. I barked out that this was the issue and he said no, that previously he had never touched the steering. It did "feel" similar though. Like maybe the steering was goin' nuts just sitting there or something. What I felt the first time was surprisingly strong, and they said it was worse the first couple of times. Seriously, the whole boat moves, and this is a reasonably big bow rider. Probably over 5000 lbs. as we were (4350 dry) Thoughts?
