Strange Volvo Issue . . .

My buddy has a 2005 Chaparral 236 SSi with a Volvo 5.7 GXi DP. On our last trip he started complaining of a semi-violent vibration . . . in neutral at idle . . .

So, I spent some time on the boat and inspected everything, mounts etc. and we also cruised around. All fine, and then we were sitting there, at idle, in neutral, nobody moving, no current, no nothin' and all of a sudden the whole boat starts wigglin'. Best word I can think of . . . wigglin'. Kinda wigglin' around on her own almost like the whole boat went fluid  He put it in gear and the wigglin' stopped. So I climbed all over the thing again and I can't see or feel anything loose or unusual. Didn't feel like an engine miss, more like something in the whole drive train package, if that makes any sense. I have had a boat pull out mounts before and it felt a little like that, but that was a Stringer and the whole drive package is loose as their is no hard mount with the transom, and you only felt the issue in gear . . .

Last little piece I can add, I was sitting in the stern and I thought I felt the wiggle starting again. And I look up to say something and he was moving the steering from one side to the other getting ready to put it in gear. I barked out that this was the issue and he said no, that previously he had never touched the steering. It did "feel" similar though. Like maybe the steering was goin' nuts just sitting there or something. What I felt the first time was surprisingly strong, and they said it was worse the first couple of times. Seriously, the whole boat moves, and this is a reasonably big bow rider. Probably over 5000 lbs. as we were (4350 dry)   Thoughts?

Found that old thread....:D

The shudder I am talking about is the whole drive actually shaking left and right. The vibration is more of a feeling, but not as sever as the shudder from power steering.
I gotta go eat. Back soon.

OK, I am trying to imagine this shudder for this situation that I experienced. Is Don (and you) saying that with the drive trim all of the way down (very likely was) and with the steering hard to one side (very possibly was, I was not at the helm), that a "shudder" or violent vibration of the drive steering, actually caused by the power steering could occur? This could definitely explain what I felt as it seemed the same although nowhere near as rapid when I felt him manipulate the steering on purpose while we were at rest in neutral . . . It would also "go away" in gear as I would guess he would quickly straighten out the wheel if he had her hard over . . . Hmmmmmmmmm.

Am I to understand that Don considered this normal? Like a power steering pump hysteresis type deal?

I have no ideal as to what Don was eluding to,i just remebered what he had said and found it to be intresting. He's probably the best diagnostician guy i have seen, so you tend to listen when he say's something.

Agreed on the thermostat, they can make quite a chatter when stuck on a car....but heavy enough to make a hull shrudder.......:D Better duck it's a new Krakatao..

The vibration with the drive trimmed all the way down and the wheel turned hard to port or stbd is normal.
That shudder or "Semi-Violent" vibration will happen in any position and is NOT normal.
When it does that, just look at the back of the engine where the PS cylinder is and see if the tiller arm going to the drive is moving back and forth, or look over the stern and see if the drive is moving.

I'll have to be on board as he is totally clueless, but thanks. The fix if it is the issue?

I think it's a problem with valve lash. It sounds like the valves were adjusted one full turn instead of 1/2. :)

IMHO, it was due to the electrical connections being crimped, not soldered.;)

The problem is USUALLY caused by air in the PS system. Then filling the system and turning the steering back and forth about 4 to 6 times with the engine NOT RUNNING

Also make sure the flats on the aluminum tube the cable goes thru is straight up and down, and that the steering cable is not binding, tied down. stuff laid on it or between the cable and the hull. That cable has to move around. Just sit back there and watch how it moves.
