strange noise in outdrive

Hello my friends, I installed outdrive and upon moving throttle back into neutral I found it was hanging up and would not come out of foward. I removed drive again and played with shift shaft and reinstalled. This time every thing worked. Throttle came out of drive went into neutral and into reverse with no problem. I started up the boat with the earmuffs and all shifting was fine. However, while at the wheel I heard a metalic like chattering sound. I went for a closer listen and it sounded like it was coming from the lower area of the drive near the prop shaft. I also noticed the prop shaft was turning very slighty while the boat was in neutral and the port motor was running. I am wondering if I stretched the throttle cable while trying to get the throttle into neutral and if I should turn the shift cable, (the one that goes into the square hole in the side of the drive and rests on the round cam roller) in one turn to take out some of the slop?<br />Thanks for any advice

It's very possible that you bent one or both of the shift shafts if you insatlled the drive and the shafts were not aligned properly. Common mistake.

Post your year, make, model & serial # if possible.....<br />What service procedures did you perform when you removed the drive?.....JK

It is a 1987 Alpha 1 not sure of the serial #.<br />I replaced the impeller and checked the alienment.

Instead of using the hit and miss and hope this works method of adjusting try reading the service manual and adjusting it properly to specs. <br />Here is a link to the Mercruiser service manual for the Alpha drives.<br /> http://www.boatfix.com/merc/Servmanl/6/6covr3.pdf <br />Section 2 will help you with the cable adjustments. Just follow the instructions step by step, and the adjustment will come out just right.

It's almost 1MB in size, so it may take a while to load even with DSL. If the cover loads, and you can get to the index, it's working. Just give it time to load.

I'm having the same problem as Jefrsonco, only with an MR outdrive. The shafts seem VERY stout and they went in without much forcing at all.<br /><br />1977 Glastron T179, 140 Merc/GM 3.0, with MR outdrive. SN: 4648535, also stamped: 1.98R<br /><br />I followed these instructions to replace the impeller . <br /><br /> http://www.mercstuff.com/waterpumpinst.htm <br /><br />I have the Chiltons, but we all know how good those are . <br /><br />Any ideas or am I being hyper-sensitive to noises that have always been there?

Start a new thread and describe your problem. You can use another thread as a reference, but don't hi jack it for your problem.<br />The second question ALWAYS gets lost.
