Strange Fuel Problem

I have an evinrude 175 that seems to be acting strangely. The fuel can be pumped in through the hand pump bowl thingy, however, when the engine starts it burns off the fuel that is in it then the engine dies. I do not believe the fuel pump is the problem though. I checked the fuel lines and there are no leaks, but something is causing there to be no pressure to move the gas from the tank to the engine. Are there any sort of safety devices or interlocks that would disable the fuel pump? Any and all suggestions are welcome!! ch26ris69@aol.com

Re: Strange Fuel Problem

on the top of your fuel tank there should be a check valve that prevents the fuel from running back into the tank once it is primed. I would take that valve out and bypass it to see if this is your problem.

TM

Re: Strange Fuel Problem

Thanks, this may sound like a dumb question...but the valve...is that actually located on the fuel tank outside the engine? Because there are 2 tanks, it does it with both tanks, and I also conected the tube with the bulb on it directly to one of the tanks. Or is this valve going to be a smaller plastic valve inside the engine and will it be before or after the fuel pump? Thanks a lot for the info.
Thanks
The rookie boat fixer guy. ch26ris69@aol.com

Chris...

What tests have been performed that lead you to believe the fuel pump is working properly? From what you've described, it sure sounds like it's not drawing fuel...

Walt

A sure way to eliminate the fuel valve (which is generally at the fuel tank) is to get a fuel tank (portable - like a small fuel canister used for lawn mowers) and connect it to your fuel bulb via fuel hose and prime your engine and run the motor. I had this same exact problem and my valve was bad! What type of boat do you have?

TM

Re: Strange Fuel Problem

Are you getting any warning horns going off? when this happend to me the anti-siphon valve went bad. There is a small metal ball in the housung that comes out of your tank. Your fuel line attaches to this housing. Sometimes the ball gets "yuck" ( a highly technical term) on it and restricts fuel flow. The hand pump ball will draw fuel because it draws with MORE suction than the fuel pump. although my problem was at 3000 rpm and higher I would check this first. When In finally found the problem it took 15 seconds to repair, but I spent hours and hours trying to trouble shoot it. I replaced fuel lines, hand bulbs, fuel filters and was going to change the fuel pump before I thought "let me try this"..and it worked. Try the simple and cheap stuff first. And Dusky 203 drew his info from my boat!!! We worked it for hours before I found the anti siphon valve....Let me know how you make out!!
