I actually LIKE ethanol! *ducks the rotton tomatoes * Used in the proper environment, it is a great fuel! My example, a well tuned turbocharged fuel injected auto engine. E85 gives me roughly 15+% more horsepower, 20+% more torque compared to 91 octane. (and very close to the same mileage)
The trick is that so few engines are actually designed to take advantage of e85, it ends up being a matter of being able to run on it without damage. A true e85 engine can run a lot more timing, and at much higher compression ratios. (I run 15 psi of boost on the above mentioned engine on pump gas, and 18-20 psi of boost on e85, as well as more timing)
(that is entirely ignoring the marine aspect of e85+water, which is an entirely different topic)
