I don't know if he truly represented a cross section of Canadian culture, but I believe that he represented the way the majority of Canadians viewed themselves.
A true Canadian and a great loss.

Yeah, when I heard this it really floored me.
I remember seeing him several times when I was in Ontario and it was always a great show. I remember a concert just outside of Ottawa one year on the Quebec side and one of the country guests was Porter Wagoner and the crowd couldn't get him off the stage fast enough in order to get Stompin' Tom on...it was kind of funny actually, no encore...just 'see ya later'. The Ol' (Rhinestone) Porter was pretty pixxed that this guy was upstaging him at a music event. All in all tho' it was a great show.
Yep...I'm with you Wrench...a true Canadian and a great loss.

I got to see him live once, could'nt believe how beat up that piece of plywood was by the end of the show.

Definetly a true Canuck!

A true Canadian ambassador, icon and legend.

They don't come any more patriotic than he, and some say that he had maple syrup running thru his veins. He has left behind a legacy thru his music of what being Canadian is all about.

Here is a great clip depicting this humble man.

Last night they played his "hockey song" at an NHL game in the ACC in Toronto, and the whole Air Canada Center was singing along.

....and the Americans are scratching their heads wondering who the Canucks are eulogising. :)

Try and imagine someone who combined the "smooth vocal stylings" of Johnny Cash with the storytelling talent of Jimmy Driftwood.
There is a certain symmetry between the Tennessee Stud and Bud the Spud....and The Battle of New Orleans and the Hockey Song.
:)
