How can I tell if the Yamaha 200 Saltwater Series II motor I am purchasing has previously been stolen. The deal seems too good to be true. I have the serial number. Where can i have that checked?

Anyone??

Howdy.. . um. . .how do you pronounce that?

If the seller cannot produce a title (I don't know if your state titles engines) or some other registration like a Yamaha Warranty card I would be suspicious, too.

Your police department should have access to listings of stolen engines. If they don't want to help try Yamaha. They can tell you who the engine was originally sold to, where, and by whom.

Good luck.

Red sky at night. . .
JB :)

mwdsdt,

Very few states title engines. The theif would have to be a "bonehead" to try and sell you an engine with the serial plate still attached. Believe me, I've checked many super deals on outboards only to find that the serial plates and block numbers were missing, SORRY PAL, I'LL PASS!

If you are really worried about it, check with the local 5-O like JB says, or call up your insurance man, they can also run a check to see if any claims have ben made through the insurance industry.

By the way, my parents have a lake place in AL, and had a 10 hp. Honda stolen off the back of their Whaler, we're still looking for the S.O.B.!

Check with the Department of Wildlife, Fisheries and Parks. Here in Mississippi thats who we go through to register boats and engines. They should be able to tell you who the engine belonged to and then you could check with that individual. They may also know if that engine has been stolen. I saw them arrest a guy and impound his boat just because the serial number on the power head didn't match the one on the transom mount.

Call Yami hdq, give them the ser. no. they might tell you if the original owner registered the engine.
