Stock Humminbird in-dash depth gauge intermittent

My 95 VIP has the in-dash little round humminbird gauge that says only the depth (no fish or bottom contour), with the thru hull transducer mounted in the bilge. It has always worked great until the end of last season and when I took the boat out for the first time this year yesterday, its very intermittent. Usually it just says "ft" with no numbers, and if I'm cruising accross the lake it will sometimes say 145 feet or something which is much deeper than the lake I was on. At the boat ramp it reads 3 feet or whatever consistently, but any deeper than about 5 feet it doesn't really work.

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Might be corroded connections. The electronic forum will get better replies.

Does it have plug-in connections on the back of it? If so, have you checked them. Only other thing I would check is the transducer to see if it's come loose at all. That depth finder is around 90.00 for a replacement. I doubt it would be much cheaper if you could just purchase the dash unit without the transducer but you might want to check to see.....if you're unit is bad but your transducer is good.

The transducer is like right under the oil pan of the engine, idk if I can even get down there to get to it. Do they install these before the engine is put into the boat?

Never had an I/O so I couldn't tell you. I have owned a factory installed depth finder like you but I never had any problems with it but then again, I really never used it or looked at it because I had a fish finder.
Yep, it's going to be hard to inspect a transducer if it's mounted under the oil pan.
