I'm confused on the following guidance, do I add all of these measurements together?
Step One

Measure from the center line of the boat steering wheel to the gunwale.

Step Two

Measure from dash board to the transom.

Step Three

Measure from gunwale to the center line of the cable connection at engine.

1992 stingray 556zp, 18' I/O 3.0 Mercruiser, Alpha One, Gen II outdrive
Need help choosing the correct type and length steering cable. I would like to TRY and install it myself to save money, but if this is not advised for a novice mechanic I will take it to a marine mechanic. I was quoted 2.5 to 3 hours labor at $125/ hour just to install it if I bought the cable.
Thanks!

pull your old cable.....read the cable length that is stamped in the cable sheath......buy new cable.

and yes, if you are paying a mechanic, that is about the going rate.
