Still Won't Start!!!

Ok so I have the 165hp Mercruiser inline6. I am finally getting spark which is great. But here is my problem. It won't completely start. I rebuilt the carb, put in a new fuel filter. It's getting gas and it wants to start but as soon as I stop turning the key it dies. I know it's something simple but I just can't figure it out. I checked for a safety switch and it doesn't have one. Please help!!!

FOR TESTING ONLY, run a wire from the + battery to the + side of the coil.
post the results, if it runs, the resistance wire or ballast resistor is open.

Ok so it started but now anytime I give it gas it stalls. thanks by the way for the wire trick. It is also idling rough and eventually dies after about 30 secs.

That hot wire is for testing only, if you leave it you`ll fry the coil. Sounds like a carb issue, might have to recheck your work .
what color are the plug tips,
