I have a Trojan F-25, inboard Merc 351W 233hp 2bbl with correct prop and clean hull.
The boat will not get to about 3500 rpms. It's rated for 4,200. When I push it above 3500rpms at WOT it starts sputtering. I've been going through the systems to find the solution. So far I've done as follows:
1) Changed out fuel filter and water separator. Cleaned out sceen to carb.
2) I found frozen spring weights and ended up putting in a new distributor. Installed Pertronix Ignitor II elec ign with Flamethrower coil. New rotor, cap, plug wires and plugs. This ign system overhaul really improved the startup and idle.
3) Set timing right on, I believe. I tuned it in while out on the river. If I advance it anymore than it is now it suffers at idle.
4) Followed line by line, the instructions by DON S. on testing the boat side fuel system. I bought a pressure gauge. The pump vacuum is correct. There are no leaks in the fuel lines and fittings. I redid all the fittings with pipe dope for good measure.
5) The compression is very good.
5) Another note - the auto choke is not working right. It's getting current, and the metal coil seems OK, but the flaps are not closing at cold start. I didn't know if this could lead to it running sluggish at WOT?
So, the next place to check -
As far as I've learned -
is the carburetor.
Perhaps fuel is not getting through at WOT. If this is a possibility, what do you suggest? Send out for a full rebuild this winter, or an adjustment now maybe?
And if there are any other places to look or suggestions, please let me know.
This has been a great learning experience - I'm learning as I go - yet I would like to get it running proper.
Thanks,
Dave
