I've got a 1998 Johnson J115SLECM on a Flats and Bay 18x8 that has never run better. I rebuilt the VRO when I did all of the carbs last year with the OEM kit and have put at least 20 hours on it since then without issue. I check the oil tank before and after every outing to make sure its consuming. Just compression tested the motor last weekend and all cylinders are at 105+/-3 psi. Seems a little low but they are all even and this motor is 23 years old with who knows how many hours. I've read 100 posts swearing pre-mix is the only way to go and ditch the VRO pump yesterday. Just wondering if I am crazy for trusting the VRO system on my particular motor? I am in the middle of a fuel tank swap so its got me researching what I need to know about premixing in a below deck aluminum fuel tank if I decide to make the switch over.

Thanks in advance.

I just put a new BRP VRO on my '96 200 Evinrude. It was deleted by the previous owner. It has the system check system and after verifying that the oil pump and warning circuits are working, I'm confidant it will perform just like the factory intended it too. Not sure why people are so worried about them failing. I for one don't feel like pre mixing 50gals of fuel every time I go out. :)

Goggle “tin foil hat” and you’ll find just as many supportive posts….

I have read a number of na sayer posts over the years. Most start off by denouncing the cost of a new pump, then go on with lines like “I heard”, “I know a guy”, but no first hand experience to share.

Never mind the inconvenient fact that the pump typically over oils upon failure.

I would venture to guess that most of the nay say is motivated by money. It’s easier to denounce than afford….

The truth of the matter is that it’s a very reliable system that will last many years with little maintenance.

No way I’m mixing 148 gallons of fuel by hand. Bad enough keeping the 3 gallon oil tank full
