Hey guys and girls, hope all had a great weekend! Well, still can't get my 1969 Johnson 40 hp to go,...summer is gone, and still not wet. Below is what I have done thus far, current smptoms, and what my next move is. ANY suggestions would be appreciated. I won;t have much time to work on it from here out, but would at least like to get it running before I winterize her! Anyway, thanks in advance for any help!

What I have done so far:

Re-built my re-build on carb to check for something I might have missed...ALL pasagesways cleared, re-built according to manual, set float, etc.

Checked compression...both cylinders @102

New wiring harness under cowl

fuel pump functioning

getting spark to both cylinders (but see comment below)

Carb and magneto aligned

Checked points...slightly pitted, but aligned and should still work fine

Gas mixture at 50:1

Going to do:

Change plugs

?check coils?

?Check capacitors?

Symptoms:

Engine cranks great, no prob, but not getting ignition, can get it to turn over with strater fluid/wd40, but then dies again.

When check plugs after trying to turn it over, they are wet, like gas not getting ignited - definitely a gas smell on them

Spark on one cylinder is somewhat weaker than on the other.

Grounding wires - One cylinder will ground about 3/4" from power head, the other has to be almost on it...within about 1/4". With plugs out and grounding them, distances are even closer, prob. 1/8" for the weaker one.

I am beginning to suspect a coil/coils. Is there a way of measuring the output (i.e.volt/ammeter?) to see if the amount of spark being used is sufficient?

What about the condensors? Could they cause a lack of ignition if one was bad?

I'm really at a loss at this point, Suggestions are welcome. Thanks in advance for any help!

Depressed, but keeping my head up,

Al T.

not sure what you mean by ground the wire.
if your spark is low you need to check your point gap, feeler gauge but a dwell meter is much better. after you've set the dwell the timing will need to be checked. i've had two engines, a motorcycle and a boat, where the wires come together on the mounting post by the points needed to be loosened then tightened. the looked fine but the dwell was jumping all over the place and it would not run very well.

Hi Al,

Chances are the coils are okay, but the problem could easily be in the points (keep them clean and gapped at .020") or the condensers. Both items are readily available and cheap. If you still think you need coils, they're not very expensive either (about $20.00 apiece depending on where you get them - dealer, NAPA, West Marine, etc.). Replace the plug wires while you're in there.

To set the points turn the crankshaft or the mag plate so that one set of points has the fibre cam rider right at the flywheel key. Set the point gap at .020" at this position. Turn the crankshaft 180 degrees and set the other set of points the same way. This motor is self timing from that point so you really don't need a dwell meter.

- Scott
