Still having the same problem with my 1985 140. it acts like it has a serious miss at idle. only when in gear. in neutral it runs great but as soon as you put it in gear it sputters and surges and dies. if you throttle it up quickly it runs great.
compression is exactly 120 across The board
i have changed plugs.
cleaned and rebuild carbs
checked for vacuum leaks
the spark jumps a 1/2 gap
8 degrees of timing at idle
all fuel lines are new
im at a loss here
someone told me since its a big bore 140 that it needs 2 fuel pumps to give it enough fuel at idle does this sound right?
it has an old style fuel pump the vro is gone

If it runs great at high speed, I wouldn't think it's a fuel pump problem. What is your idle RPM, about 750 in gear in the water? Use a timing light and check each spark plug and see if you are dropping any.

I checked with the timing light on each wire. none of them seemed to drop off

Re: still need help with my 85 140

i've had my 1985 140 with the vro for 20 years. it will idle around smooth as can be all day...
you said 'the vro is gone'
read this to understand how the vro may help idle...
"The older pumps idled between 150:1 (prior to 1990) and 100:1 (1990-1992), then richened up to 50:1 as the engine load increased"
link to vro info... http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html
are your plugs gapped @ .040?
also... i have heard of slow speed jets ``opening up'' over time enough to screw up idle... new jets - idled better & better on gas...

"Use Champion QL77JC4 or L77JC4 s/plugs and set the gap at .040 . The "Q" indicates a resistor plug to help quiet noise/interference in electronic equipment." Per Joe Reeves...

have you check the check valves on the motor one of them could be stuck. I was having a similiar problem with my 150xp found a check valve stuck.

On boat.net or iboat you can find the breakdown of your motor. it will show you were the check valves are on your motor they should be
mounted in behind the carbs. I am not sure how many carbs. is on your but I figure there are three I have a 1985 150XP evinrude and it
has three carbs on it and behind them i have 6 check valves on it. you can unscrew the check valves to check them.

I check on your boat motor and it has 2 carbs. on it and it allso has 4 check valves. all so crank the boat motor up at night and make sure that the spark plug wires are any electric wires is not arcing off to ground.

Re: still need help with my 85 140

My motor has 4 carbs.
i know now that it is dropping spark on all 4 cylinders for about a second then they fire right back up. no arching can be seen anywhere on the motor. also i don't think the stator is working would this be related to it dropping spark ?
