I posted a few messages regarding this same topic, but have yet to find a suitable resolution.

I have a 1986 115 yamaha (oil injected) that I believe to be running rich. When in the water on idle she smokes what seems to be an aweful lot. And sometimes dies out. When under way the engine runs great. I know 2-cycles are notorious for smoking, but is there a way to fine-tune the fuel/oil mix, if in fact this is the problem.

Does this pose a potential problem to the engine, or is itan easy fix?

Any input would be much appretiated...Thanx!!

Hey jgm7739,

Sounds like the oil injection system is delivering a rich oil mixture.

I would not mess with this system myself, I'd have a knowledgable mechanic look it over and test it.

Unless you are sure you can follow the testing procedure in a repair manual for the oil injection system, and have all of the testing devices, let someone who knows do it.

Kenny

Thanks Kenny, I will certainly heed your advise...but do you know if this situation is a potential $$$$$ problem, or easily fixed.

Hey jgm7739,

I don't think that an adjustment on that motor would be expensive, but we are talking about a boat here, and nothing is cheap on a boat.

Kenny

Check pilot screws on carbs/4 spring-loaded screws/top front quarter of each carb. gently seat the screws and then back them out 1to11/4 turns and see if that helps

Two strokes need oil more is better than not enough so unless there is an enviromental/ pollution/bad smell/ :( health problem leave it alone. If any of the above applies get a manual & adjust the oil injecton linkages you may as well give the poor thing a tune up while your at it :)

You can also have a mechanic disable the oil mix system and premix it yourself, if you want to be sure that it is always at a certain mixture and no problems with injection system, etc... but that probably presents other problems (and a pain in the neck) for you.

If it was mine, I would get a mechanic to adjust it and then I wouldn't have to worry about it. Hope you're better than me at repairs, you can save yourself some $$$

Better to adjust mixture now than fix several problems down the road :)

Good luck!

It may sound like I've been reading the sales brochure but I've found that using genuine yamalube minimises smoke. To test for over oiling run engine to operating temp, then let idle for about 2-3 min, switch off & remove plugs they should be dry. And as for removing the oil injection, remember, this isn't crappy OMC VRO.So why buy the best system ever, and then trust that you can remember to mix oil better than the system designed to make your boating simpler. Also scroll for "yamaha oil problems" you will not find many.
