i have a 35 mercury(late 80's) and the throttle is tough to turn.. i took it apart and its a gear and a wire..( wire is grooved so the gear grabs on to it and pulls it.. i was wondering if anyone knew how i could loosen it up or is there a different throttle assembly that i could use on it.. all the other mercs ive run arent that stiff.. any suggestions would help

Re: sticky throttle

Have you tried disconnecting the throttle cable to determine if the resistance is in the tiller throttle grip, or if it is actually in the throttle cable?

If the throttle grip turns freely, it is further up the line. My guess would be either a stiff cable (needs lubed or replaced), or something up at the throttle linkage in the motor (Spark Advance linkage area).

Re: sticky throttle

okay the wire hills and velleys that match witht the gear.. ( the gear pulls it in and pushes it out of the throttle assembly through a braided metal covering with a sharp curve.. im just wondering if someone has put this on themselves or if it comes from merc with this.. it was a remote steering/throttle but changed it to tiller and im just wondering if their are any alternatives???

Re: sticky throttle

There was a tiller option for 35 HP late 80's from Mercury - so someone probably did some butchering to convert it. IF it is an actual Mercuruy tiller assembly that someone just attached to the motor, you should be able to find replacement parts.

I am not sure I completely understand what you are asking, but there is a very similar set up for the Mercury OEM part. If you contact me via e-mail, I will send you a diagram.
