Hello,
We have a 1969 85 hp Evinrude outboard. For the past six years, the electric shifter hasn't been working properly. It refuses to shift from forward back to neutral 90% of the time. It will go from forward to reverse (yes, I know I shouldn't do that) every time. It will go from reverse to neutral every time, so this proves that all three switches in the control panel are working properly. The problem seems to be in the motor. But get this: it only does it when the boat is in the water. I can run the motor in the driveway for hours, and it will shift properly *every time*, and then it will immediately screw up again as soon as I put it in the water. It seems like the higher water pressure from being in the lake has some effect on it.

I have taken it to two mechanics, and they both claim to have fixed it. Neither one did, and I have been thorougly ripped off twice. Have any of you encountered this problem before? Can you tell me how to fix it, or at least what to tell the next mechanic I go to?

Thanks guys.
