sticking valve

Volvo Penta 260 has a sticking or bent valve. Engine hasn't been ran in several months. I found a bent pushrod on # 4 cylinder, valve was found closed. Valve will now open but spring does not re-close valve. I have been lubricating valve stem & will try to free it up. If not, heads will be removed. Has anyone else had this problem? With this engine, is it possible for piston to hit the valve?

Re: sticking valve

Pull the spark plug and look for signs of water. It is possible the manifold/riser is leaking water in and seizing the valve due to rust.

Re: sticking valve

hello,

its a STUCK valve that the valve spring wont close!! valve springs - they usuually put about 130 or so psi on the valve at the seat, much more when open.

if it were mine, id have that hole with piston at TDC!! then u can play with the valve with keepers out, and also ck the valve spring to see if it has failed without loosing valve thru the valve guide. u can also take up valve to piston clearancw with a rope stuffed in thru plug hole. this will aid in keeping valve up. u may have a broken valve spring. they do break!! ;)

but in any event, that 130 psi on seat should close her fine. if not, it does need to be ckd as when it heats its bound to seize. not good.

hope u will let us know what u discover.
