I've removed my sterndrive and pivot housing but I cannot get them apart. I've tried penetrating oil, hammer & chisel, hammering on the studs, no luck. Any suggestions? Would a shop have some type of puller that might work, or are they going to charge me $70 per hour to beat on it with a hammer?

Thanks

What kind of drive and pivot housing are we talking about?

It's a 1999 volvo penta DP-S. Any advice? It's almost as if the two parts are fused together.

No special tools for that. Sounds like it's been in saltwater and has never been off.
It's probably going to take lots of heat and some possible drive work when done.
Doesn't sound like an inexpensive repair to me.

Thanks Don, this is about the 4th time you've given me good advice. I'm taking it to the shop. My next step was going to be chaining the drive to a large tree and the pivot housing to my large truck and pulling them apart.

Re: Sterndrive stuck to pivot housing

are you sure you took all 4 bolts off? I assume your trying to seperate the upper gearbox from the intermediate housing. if the corrosion has locked the two studs its a bit fun. I use heat and use the studs as jacking screws. in the salt pond if it does not come apart every other year or so for maint it may not come apart when it needs to.

From the above statement, I assumed he meant he was trying to seperate it at the red line in the picture below.

Re: Sterndrive stuck to pivot housing

That is exactly where I'm trying to seperate it. I've talked to two shops. One said he can get it done next week, the other said he would try, but can't guarantee he won't break it. I'm not taking it to him. Should I be worried about someone breaking my expensive drive?

Re: Sterndrive stuck to pivot housing

I would have made the same statement, regarding breakage.
Like I said right to start with it's going to take a lot of heat and some possible drive work.
The drive needs to be heated so the studs attached to the pivot housing pull out of the drive. And that may damage some seals, but breakage would probably be the pivot housing itself, not the drive.
The way it got that way to begin with was lack of maintenance. No way would a drive hang up like that without years of corrosion.......Well, unless someone put Never Sieze on the studs. That would sure lock them up tight in a short time.

Re: Sterndrive stuck to pivot housing

Makes sense. The guy I got it from had it in the water behind his house in Fort Lauderdale for 3-4 yrs. Never used it, never took it out of the water

Re: Sterndrive stuck to pivot housing

I am with dons on the breakage. but usually with enough oxy/acetylene I can get the loose. the drive shaft bearing box also gets water then corrosion around the bearing box and the pivot housing. which is why i always beat up on the maint issue. if its in any water that crabs are its salt, dont care if largemouth bass live there too. :)
i have had to destroy the pivot housing with a side grinder and cut all six studs, but only once.

Re: Sterndrive stuck to pivot housing

Well, they broke the housing. It was on there pretty good, so I'm not surprised. Don was right, it took a lot of heat & chiseling. Does anyone know where I can pick up a new pivot housing, preferably used?
