Sterndrive identification

Good evening folks,

Looking to replace my outdrive (fair amount of corrosion, I need to replace the lower drive bearing, impeller, etc., so just assume replace the whole thing with a nice new pretty one and be done with it). Not looking to change to a different drive ratio or anything, just trying to find out what I have... is this stamped on the outdrive anywhere? It's a v8 (305) on a 2001 24' Bayliner Ciera (Alpha 1 Gen 2).

See a lot of posts about switching to other ratios and with to put on their boat, etc... just want to know what I have.

Found this pic in the manual, but it just isn't there on the sterndrive... The unit looks to have been painted once or twice, but can't see anything in that location. Looked all over the outdrive and nothing. Is it typically in pressed/indented serial and ratio or is it typically a sticker/decal... Was thinking about maybe getting my angle grinder with a scotchbrite wheel and see if I can't uncover the serial/ratio, but it may be a waste of time and I will probably grind it away. Soooooo...... 2001 23.5' Bayliner Ciera with a V8 305 merc... what drive ratio am I looking at here?

Upper Units are available in your choice of 1.47, 1.62, 1.81 & 1.94, 2.0 & 2.4 gear ratios. As with all SEI products, upper and lower units feature all new parts throughout. Lower units available with counter-rotation.

Did you scrape off the paint and possibly the old decal? The numbers are usually stamped into the housing under the decal.
You may also have the drive number on a decal on the engine.
Of course if it's not the original drive you may have to pull the top cap and count gear teeth.

Planning to replace both upper and lower together... standard rotation (clockwise). What factors do I need to take into consideration when choosing ratio? Would like to just replace with what I have, but I can't seem to find that ratio.

Let's try to find the drive info a different way, Do you have the engine and transom assembly serial number handy? It's a 50/50 that someone here may be able to find the drive info using the other info as long as you have reason to believe the engine, drive & transom assembly are original to the boat?

Well guys, found the serial, but I suppose this is still inconclusive... can't really make out the letter which appears to be the key according to the manual's serial cross-reference chart. what do you all think? If the letter is L, it would make it a 2:1, so I suppose I could just go turn the drive shaft...

What do you all think? : /

Fun Times... I can get the engine number, but probably not be able to the get the transom number... I suppose I can start grinding at that, but would prefer not...

Also... Any of you guys have experience with MercAftermarkets - The leader in Outboard Lower Units, Sterndrives, and Powerheads! ??? for the new sterndrive? or have recommendations?

Look just above your original post and click on the sterndrive. When you get to the drives, vendor 999 is SEI drives just so you know who they are. 3 year warranty. around $1700 if I remember correctly.

No need to do any more grinding especially since you found the original drive number and Don found the needed info for you.

That's a good clear picture of a ground down drive serial number to use as a reference in the future when needed.
