Trying to see if enough water is coming up from the pump in the stern drive. I am not seeing any increase in the water flow as engine rpm's increase. I disconnected the water hose inside the boat coming from the drive to watch the flow.

Is the water flow supposed to ramp up as engine speed increases?

Yes. And it there is a Merc. test to measure your drive pump's output. You need to do this in the water, because the garden hose flow can alter the results. Depending on your drive's gear ratio the pump should deliver between three and four gal/min at 1000 rpm. Ave is around 3.3 gal/min The procedure is to disconnect the out drive water supply hose where you can collect the pump discharge in a gallon container. An antifreeze jug works nicely. Merc. stresses taking a 15 second sample and shutting off the engine to protect the exhaust system from overheating.

Remember to do this a 1000 rpm. Measure the water in the container. 3 quarts=3 gal/min, 3.5 = 3.5 gal/min. etc. If you get this output, your pump is OK. If not, you should replace the impeller, especially if you are having cooling issues. Assuming good impeller efficiency the output will roughly double at 2000 rpm, triple at 3000 rpm, etc.

Ayuh,..... Welcome Aboard,...... A seat of the pants test,... ya hold that hose straight up, 'n at idle, the stream of water should be 5" or higher, before it topples over onto itself,.....

There is no way this thing is pumping out 3 - 4 gallons per minute. And 5 inches up before falling over, at 1000 rpm, no.
Water just flops over the edge of the hose as it exits, at 2000 rpm. And no increase in force of water from 1000 to 3000 rpm

I pulled boat out of water today; plan to pull lower half of drive (Alpha) and replace entire water pump. I'll post the results in a few days.

Thank you both. And, Bondo, thanks for the welcome.
