I pulled the upper housing off and when i put it back together after 3-4 hours fighting with aligning the shaft into the transom, i must not have the shift cable hooked up correctly inside the upper housing because it cranks and it is engaged (prop spinning) and engine shuts off if i try to move forward or reverse. I disconnected shift cable from shift plate and tried to move it and it wont slide in or out, i even tried moving the prop at the same time but i cant move cable. Will i have to remove the upper housing again??? I hope not!
My boat is a 1987 SeaRay with 4 Cylinder mercruiser I/O with Alpha one.

Did you put the shifter in forward prior to removal?

Re: Stern Drive Question

When you get the drive back off...... Put it in foward gear then when you reinstall, make sure you are keeping tension the prop in a counter clockwise direction. Check the pump while you are back in there also if you had been trying to run it.
