my boat is Mercuiser 2.5L,1989, the lower unit is leaking at the shaft pin. Do you have step by step to take the lower unit off from engine. I do not want to take the boat to the marine. Do you know how to fix it?

Hi -- Your going to need a good procedure from a manual -- its no too hard to pull a drive

// However repairing internal parts can require special skills and tools.

Here is a link to the online manual

http://boatinfo.no/lib/library.html

A few tips

Ensure the shift is in FORWARD or you can bend shift linkage related parts when pulling or installing.

SEI has affordable replacement drives that have good reviews should you choose to go that route.

Review the stickies at the top of this section and do a pressure test BEFORE disassembling the drive

either the driveshaft seals , or the water pump base seals.
either are easy enough for a beginer with the proper manual and coaching.

I have a bunch of videos on different repairs, including removal of the drive. Click the ' My Videos' link at the bottom of my signature in this post..

Presumably an alpha one gen 1 ??
are you sure it’s a 2.5l ? Not sure I’ve ever seen a 2.5l mercruiser from 1989.
It likely doesn’t have a gear oil header tank at that age...but if it does...remember and disconnect it before pulling the drive off.

Currently watching a youtube series called PBS-Spacetime... If you want 'more knowledge', that is a really great place to start....
