Short answer: you can't. The play can be caused by a worn steering box or a worn steening arm at the stern. Have someone move the wheel back and forth while you check the movement at the engine connection. That will tell you which end has to be replaced. Very often the steering box replacement will also include a new steering cable, especially on a 1985 boat. Download the manual for your outdrive for information on parts replacement. Hy

Ayuh,... 1st thing ya gotta do is FIND the Slop...

Have someone hold the wheel, while someone else shakes the drive while you Look at it's connection points...
Then reverse the procedure, 'n Look again...
Once you find the slop, fix that part....

Too much play WHEN? When idling through a no-wake zone, full throttle, or on the trailer?

+1 for locating the source. Make sure re-torquing the two tiller arm bolts is part of your yearly maintenance, 55lbs/ft each.

I wonder what kind of outdrive he actually has? May not even have any bolts to re-torque.
