I've reach the posts and know about the tapered shafts, but I didn't come across one that had a "square" fitting on the hub like what I have.
I have taken the steering wheel off and outlined the square mount that holds the wheel in place along with a large nut and washer.

What do I need to do to be able fit a more modern steering wheel?

Thanx,

Al

What Bond-o said, or have a machine shop make an adapter.

Does that entire silver assembly turn when you turn the steering shaft? It looks like part of the old wheel, not the helm itself. It should come off, leaving you with a tapered shaft. That looks like a release tab located at 12 o'clock next to the shaft.

That squared portion is a keyed fitting. Remove it to reveal a tapered shaft.

Personally, I think the old wheel looked kind of cool.
