Hi all
I have a 1988 mercruiser 3.0 with power steering. The steering wheel is not turning very easily. Wether the motor is at high rpm or not its the same. The pump has fluid which actually im not sure what kind to use. Ive known some pumps to use power steering fluid or tranny fluid. Mine has red fluid in it. Anyways its not whining or anything no leaks either. Why so stiff?

Re: steering trouble

The pump itself could be failing. I don't know what the output pressure should be nor how to rig to test it but that is what I would suspect.

Another possible thing is air in the lines. Try bleeding the lines out.

Re: steering trouble

It probably has nothing to do with the power steering.
Normally the problem with stiff steering is where the steering cable end goes through the aluminum tube through the power steering cylinder.
Pull the cable out of the tube and clean all the corrosio out of it, lube it up and it will probably work fine.
If you can't pull the cable out buy hand, heat it with a propane torch till it pulls out.
