steering trouble

What is the secret to getting the steering wheel to come off of the console after I've removed the nut and washer?

There is a 'key' shaped like a half moon in a slot on the steering shaft that fits into the slot on the steering wheel. My wheel was cracked, so I just pried it apart...but it did take a while.
