Steering Trouble on a 94' Starcraft

I have a 94’ Starcraft 1709 with a 115hp Mariner o/b on the back. My steering in incredibly hard. I have to use a lot of force to get the wheel to turn. It’s more noticeable at lower speeds. I purchased a “Big Bubba” tube this past weekend and I had a lot of trouble doing the tighter turns and stuff that is required while trying to have fun while pulling a tube.

Any suggestions on how to improve the steering would be great. Do I need a new cable?? I even thought about upgrading to a hydraulic system if that is even possible.

Thoughts?

Thanks!!

I have no experience with this but I am a fixit man, so I'll try.
The wheel turns, it makes the cable move, and that pushes the motor. You need to try and determine which part is giving trouble.
If you disconnect the cable from the motor, is it still hard to move? Can you move the motor back and forth by hand or is that part sticky? Will the wheel turn freely if it is disconnected from the cable? My guess would be that the cable is the most likely culprit.
Good luck.

Great writeup there. That should be in a How to or FAQ section.

The helms are not meant to be serviceable, and they are bolted / riveted together. Morbid curiosity got the best of me, so I drilled out the rivets.

The large gear is actually upside down, the smaller helical gear at the top is where the cable is fed in, and the big gear meshed witht he little gear, the little gear being attached to the steering wheel.

When mine failed, I could only turn partially right. This is what happens when your cable is sticking and you give the steering wheel everything you got - teeth break off (missing / bent about 8 or so in the foreground.) The bits of broken teeth prevented it from rotating more than about 330 degrees.

Re: Steering Trouble on a 94' Starcraft

I just went through this mess on a new-to-me, '95 Trophy with a 120hp Force on the back. The sad part is, and trust me, I learned this recently and have been bad about it too, that preventative maintenance could eliminate future issues like this one, and mine. The steering/tilt tube, at the motor where the cable goes through and then attaches on the Starboard side, is easy to apply grease to, but rarely gets anyone's attention. In my case, it had locked up to the point that I had to cut the cable, pull the motor off and I still couldn't get the remaining cable out of the tilt tube. And this is after applying heat for 3 days. That's how "stuck" they can become. Previous Owner had been using this boat up until about a month before I purchased it. He said he thought the steering was a little "stiff", but that's as far as he worried about it. $300.00 later, I have it fixed (I got really hurt on a new tilt tube), but I know one thing for sure: I will always keep an eye on that steering tube and I plan to pull the cable totally out, annually, and using a shotgun bore cleaning brush to clean out the old grease before I apply new.

Just an aside to the great instructions above: If your tilt/steering tube on the outboard is still "ok" (meaning the cable can still be pushed or pulled through it) there's a chance you can 'open' the access hole where the cable comes out/goes into the splashwell of the boat. In my case, I could use a 3/8" bit to "enlarge" that hole to where the cable was allow to sit level with the tube when reinstalling or removing. Look at that because it could save you from having to remove the outboard if you're not equipped to do so. Obviously, removing it is the best option, but at least there is another alternative.

DSC04122.jpgOthers have mentioned sliding the engine over to the port side with a jack or using the tongue jack and blocking the engine. I tried, but was a little too nervous about it getting away from me. My transom is notched and there is only about 3" of room to slide it over. I also tried loosening the bolts and pivoting the engine up, but it didn't help. After lifting the engine, I realized there would never been enough room. Here is the engine lifted and pulled back - doesn't need much.

Re: Steering Trouble on a 94' Starcraft

Thanks guys, this is all great information. I guess I need to get it out of dry dock and bring it home to mess around with it. Do you guys know if it is possaible to upgrade to a hydraulic system? Can it be add to my boat? I know it would cost some money but if it can be done I would like to consider this option.

Again thank you!

Teleflex entry level hydraulic steering is the Baystar system - probably appropriate for your size boat as it is good for up to 150hp. I considered it as well, but the cost was a bit higher. If you shop around on line, you can get the Teleflex cable-based No Feedback 4.2 kit for right around $200, give or take. The Baystar kit is around $600. The helm is replaced by a steering wheel driven pump, the cable is replaced by a pair of cut-to-length hydraulic hoses, and a piston assembly attaches to the engine. Put it all togeher, add the oil, bleed, and you are good to go. Probably not much more work than installing a new cable and helm. They sell them here on iboats:
