Hi all.

We were out on the lake this last weekend, and just as I was bringing the boat out of the water to put on the trailer I noticed a shutter in the steering. This shutter is noticed most when the outdrive is trimmed all the way up and when the props are not spinning. I have a Volvo 5.0L MPI with a DPS dualprop outdrive and hyraulic steering.

As you turn the steering wheel you feel the drive start to shutter for a second or two, then it stops. The shutter shakes the whole boat! After I noticed the problem with the leg trimmed up I then proceeded to try steering with the leg trimmed down, and it the problem is still there, but you would never notice it unless you were looking for it. The same is true for when the props are spinning - the problem is there, but much less noticeable.

Does anybody have any idea what could be causing this? So far I have considered: hydraulic steering, bad u joints, something physically stuck in the housing preventing the arm from steering...

Now, the thing is that we managed to run into a sandbar (more like a boulderbar) the day before with the leg trimmed up 1/2 way - but we were only idling. The props got dinged up a bit, but nothing serious. I can't see how this could have caused the steering problem - but whooo knows.?

If you have any ideas, please let me know.

Thanks!
Ben
