I an a complete novice when it comes to the following! I've a 1999 Arima Sea Chaser with a Honda 130. The rack & pinion steering needs replacement.

I can't get the shaft out of the cylinder. It's a Teleflex unit. Help!!!

Alternatively, is there a site with complete directions for removal/assembly?

Should I upgrade to a NFB unit? Or, bite the bullet and go with the Bay Star hydraulic unit? Is the Bay Star easier to put in? Will the weight of the 130 have any negative effect?

Re: Steering replacement

Are you sure it is rack and pinion steering or just Teleflex single cable steering?

Re: Steering replacement

This is a common failure on all brands of engines operated in salt water .What happens is we ingest a little salt spray over and over again into that steel tilt tube and it begins to corrode from the inside out .That corrosion eventually pinches off the steering rams ability to move through it.You can try carefully tapping that cable out after disconnection.Look carefully at your boat .years back the engine had to be removed to pull or install that steering cable on your Arima.

Re: Steering replacement

If we are talking about the type of steering I think we are, or at least that hondon is, I have had this problem a couple of times, it happens with regular use as hondon explained, and I have always used a torch to heat up the tilt tube and steering ram and then while it is still hot tapping the end of the ram. It sometimes helps also if you disconnect it from under your steering wheel first because this may let the cable move in a little easier. Good Luck.
