Steering Problem

I have a 19 ft Vhull with Mercruiser 3.0 engine. Boat has rack and penion (no power assist) steering. There is always a pull to the left. At moderate speeds (20-22 MPH) it is managble but at higher speeds (30+) it takes a real effort to keep the boat straight. Any ideas appreciated.

Re: Steering Problem

Are you running a hydrofoil (whale tail) on your outdrive?
Have you tried adjusting the anode tab? (fin above the prop) Sounds like torgue steer from the prop.
Tell us more about what kind of boat..rack and pinion steering with no power assist?

Boat is a 2005 Bayliner 192 Clasic Cuddy with Mercruiser 3.0 engine with no aftermarket attachments. If adjusting the anode, which way to correct left hand pull?

Re: Steering Problem

Generally, you will turn the anode INTO the direction of the pull.
i.e. If the boat wants to turn starboard when you let go of the wheel, turn the anode incrementally to the starboard side. It's a delicate balance, so don't move the anode a great deal; remember, this condition often eases up as you trim out, so don't overdo it.

Re: Steering Problem

To clarify - the rear of the anode (trailing edge) towards the pull.
