Re: steering problem
I'm assuming you're using a cable-based system running of either a rack or rotary drive helm system. I recently refurbished my own steering for the same reason - getting very tight.

Like mine, the Morse Teleflex cable can not be dismantled and serviced. It has to be replaced. Elsewhere on these forums I have read techniques for soaking the entire cable in a degreasing solution (gasoline etc.) but it is tremendous hassle. And then, how does one re-grease the insides of the cable? I paid about US$65 for a new 12-foot cable.

I did however take apart the rotary helm system, cleaned the insides, replaced a plastic sleeve or two and then re-greased and put everything back together. Works like new now. Hence I saved the cost of a new helm and attachments.

If your cable is old and stiff, then in my opinion it's probably beyond repair. Try greasing the end which exits from the helm control a few times - you may get some improvement. Also, try lubricating the area where it passes thru the tilt-tube (assuming your tie-rod connects to the engine).

If you do get a new cable, do follow a regular lubricating schedule. It will greatly extend the life of your steering system.

More preventive measures include ensuring the cable is laid out as straight as possible, avoiding kinks and tight bends.

Hope this helps!
evindude
