Hi,
Everytime I go out to work on this new (used) boat I find something else is wrong...

Ive got a 3.0L mercruiser with a teleflex rack and pinion steering.

My steering is really stiff. The more I work it with the wheel back and forth, the better it gets, but if I let it sit for a minute I'm back to where I started. Ive changed a cable before, so first I figured that if I freed up the outdrive, I could see if its the cable or not. Only problem is that the conncection where cable goes to outdrive is rusted up pretty good. Any ideas, suggestions?

Also, I cant seem to get the steering wheel off. I removed the cap, then the bolt and washer, then I cant figure it out. I pulled, but it wouldnt come off?

Ok, found the answer to the steering wheel question in an old post. Put nut back on to protect threds and whack it with a hammer while pulling on the wheel...Easy enough...

If you can't get the locknut off the steering rod mechanism, get some PB blaster and soak the sucker. Let stand for a day or so then try again. We use the stuff on our Jeeps and it works really well.

So your a new boat owner congrats.Look at it this way you will figure this out through this forum and the great people who write in. Then you will have another problem and another that is what having a boat is like .Just learn to be patient and love your boat and in return it will give you something back. Hopefully some big fish.

If you do want to take the cable off and check it that PB Blaster is the best stuff I have ever seen, it should do the job. But as far as those cables go, there is no harm in replacing them, I have had them sieze up on me with little or no warning, and I'm talking actually siezed where you can't even move it.

Steering prob???
New Boat (custom Built)

jet drive 460 ford engine.

Steering cable is fairly new, bought last summer, was trying it today, and could only turn to the left (REAL SLUGGISHLY) going right would not go at all (unless someone was on the back side of impeller pushing the steering mech. Is there anything i can use to free this cable without replacing it again?

try posting a new thread you might find that people will be less confused and you will know if they are answering you or the original thread
