Steering Problem on my Searay

I have a 1990 Searay 180 Bowrider which I am about to get back on the water, after a misadventure that occured last August. I guess you could say I'm still on the steep part of the learning curve...

Anyway, my wife keeps complaining about the steering on the boat. It seems to kind of lock up, or bind and chatter, when making low speed turns. She's the one in the boat during launch and recovery, so I have to take her word for it and the description of the problem since I don't think I have the patience to teach her to back the trailer down the ramp.

I've added fluid to the steering system, but the problem persists. I was thinking that maybe it needs to be purged of air, but how would this be done if that's the problem? I'm just guessing here.

To repeat, the odd thing is that the problem doesn't seem to be evident at higher speeds, just at very low speeds. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance!

-dd-

Take this with a grain of salt. If you're new and have had a mishap, don't mess around. Take the boat to a qualified mechanic and let him find and fix the problem. Don't mess around when it comes to safety and steering is a safety issue. JMHO.

Re: Steering Problem on my Searay

Thanks guys. I think I'll try the bleed and fill procedure, since I am not made of money. I've made some mistakes already, but I'm learning. I'm really a pretty good hand when it comes to mechanicals, but boats are just way different from cars and trucks. I can do this, with a little help from friends! ;)
