I am not sure. I think it is at the transom where the shaft slides into the sleeve. I gave it a hefty spray of wd 40 but, may have to remove it from the boat to really be able to work on it. I am just looking for a short cut ,these older boats are sometimes headaches when removing equipment.

Probably corroded in there. WD-40 is not the best, try some PB Blaster or similar. You may need heat also. smacking it back and forth to jolt it loose. But you should do that by hitting a block of wood to prevent any mis shaping of the end from a hammer (or it will never come out). Once you get it out use a shotgun brush inside the tube back and forth and hooked to a drill to clean it out.

proper maint. is to run the slide out as far as you can and coat with marine anti corrosion grease during lube service, more often if condition warrant.

Good luck, keep us informed.

Hummm. Gotta '65 myself, and it uses the old cable/pulley setup. Was yours retrofitted? Pictures ;)

Well I found out it is froze after you leave the transom. Is there anyway to get the cable loosened up in the black protective cover? I will try to get pics of this set up for all to view.

Nope, cables are not serviceable, just replaceable, can't lube or anything else. If it's froze it's toast period.
