steering linkage

i need to replace the steering linkage for a 1966 merc outboard.do i need to measure the linkage i have?and how do i go about ordering.also can you tell me the degree of difficulty in relacing it my self.<br /><br /> thanks

If you want by any means to able to check if you get the right parts, do as much investigation as you can before leaving home. Measure all, look at details, fittings and all. Check brand (the box that the cable runs in behind the wheel) as differend makes are not alike. <br />It's not difficult to replace the cable if access to the details are good. I did it once by attacting the wheel end of the new cable to the motor end of old cable and hen pull the thing through.<br /><br />Complete sets are quite reasonably priced so if the thing won't come apart prepare for a complete swap.
