I have on my 2001 Bayliner Capri 1950 a 4.3 l Mercruiser.
Steering is so hard I don't think the hydraulic pump is working at all. Any idea how to troubleshoot step by step. This is my first boat and I have owned it for one week now.
Thanks !

It's probaby not the cable or the power steering causing the problem. It's very common to have corrosion in the aluminum tube on the power steering cylinder, where the steering cable goes through it. Unscrew the large cable nut that holds the cable on the power steering unit and see if the wheel then turns easy as the outer part of the cable moves freely. My bet is it will.

I disconnected the cable from the cylinder as you suggested. no signs of wear on the tube, Steering still very stiff. I am guessing I need a new cable?

Ayuh,... Did you pull the clevis pin on the other side,..??
The corrosion is usually Inside the aluminum tube...

If it's Clear,.. Does the drive swing easily with it disconnected,..??

If so,... Replace the cable, 'n helm...
